About Understanding Islamic Academy
The ideal model of Islamic education set by the Prophet of Islam, peace be
upon him, involves the understanding of both the text and context, or sources
and society. Every vibrant, productive, and conscious Muslim community has Islamic
institutes of education where the teachers and scholars create an environment
of interactive learning and insightful discourse.
As the name itself implies, Understanding Islam Academy, originating
in summer 2002, is an endeavour facilitating the understanding (Fiqh) and education
of sacred Islamic traditions and sources in the contemporary North American
context.
Far from theoretical discourses on 'good to know' subjects, UIA's deliberately
designed sessions offer stuff you 'need to know' as a Muslim who loves Allah
and His creation.
UIA Objectives:
- Empowering our participants with the essential tools to
interpret and implement the central message of the Qur’an and the traditions
of the Prophet Muhammd (pbuh)
- Instilling confidence in them through the analysis of
rich Islamic history
- Enabling them to produce a personal intellectual Islamic
response to the challenges their community and human family are facing today
- Inspiring them to actively seek, read, research, and specialize
in Islamic sciences
- Harmonizing the often conflicting approaches to Islamic
learning (the traditional/spiritual, academic, and literal) in our community
- Establishing a dynamic and dialectic movement between
the Islamic sources and our North American environment, required to develop
a healthy Muslim identity
Our Instructors & Pioneers:
It is with these objectives in sight, we have invited and featured scholars,
