11:00 am- "Inspiration for Change" Session: Making of a Great Organization
Presenter: Junaid Mirza (Senior Manager, Deloitte; Director, Teach for Islam; Mercy Mission)

In this presentation we will discuss lessons we can learn both from the Seerah of the Prophet and the modern organizational and leadership research to become better leaders, form more effective teams, drive better performance and make our organizations great.

11:40 am- "Community Conversations" Session: Islamophobia: How We Can Positively Engage Media?

Presenter: Panel Discussion with Jawad Jafry (Producer, Director & Writer) & Naheed Mustafa (An Award-Winning Broadcaster and International Journalist with CBC)

Discussion Points:

1- How do we understand media: Is it a community service or a commercial enterprise? Who does media primarily serve?
2- What are some systematic issues to consider in understanding media? How do they contribute to irresponsible news reporting at times?
3- Many people think media is inherently biased. Is it true?
4- What are the possible sources of bias, specially Islamophobia, in the media?
5- What can we do to counter negative news about Islam and Muslims in the media?
6- How can we become producers of positive news instead of being a consumer of media?

What is Community Development Program (CDP)?


CDP is a series of town-hall discussions and workshops to help volunteers, activists, and leaders in the Muslim community develop themselves spiritually and organizationally to be effective agents of social change. CDP is an Understanding Islam Academy initiative (a project of DawaNet & Sound Vision)


Objectives of CDP are to:

  1. Enhance our organizational and soft skills necessary for our roles

  2. Help us network with each other and share best practices of volunteerism and leadership

  3. Develop a deeper understanding of our vision and objectives (as an organization and community at large)

  4. Create a dialogue and discuss tough questions and challenges facing our community and the human family; devise possible solutions with the help of professionals and qualified scholars in the community

  5. Instil a spirit of team work, excellence (Ihsan), and devotion for the pleasure of Allah, required for our work
